SLATE VSR8

SLATE VSR8

THE VRS8

The result of nearly three years of development, the new VRS8 Virtual Analog interface unifies Slate Digital’s software and hardware into a robust audio ecosystem called The Virtual Recording Studio. We used a “no compromise” design approach, resulting in a fantastic-sounding eight channel audio interface that leads the industry when it comes to components, specs, price and performance.

Eight Ultra Linear Preamps

The start of any signal chain is extremely important, which is why the VRS8 features EIGHT high bandwidth Ultra Linear microphone preamps. These are the same ‘blank canvas’ design as the VMS-One preamp from our award-winning Virtual Microphone System, enabling you to use our modeling software to recreate the authentic sound of famous microphones and preamps. Each preamp has its own high-quality metal knob, so you can easily set levels like a regular analog preamp – instead of using single logic controller knobs and menus, as some of our competitors have chosen to do.

Industry Best Converters

The next step in the signal chain is the converter itself. Instead of using budget components, the VRS8 offers mastering-quality conversion by incorporating the newest AKM AK5578 converter chips – offering a whopping industry-best 124db of dynamic range on all 8 inputs!

High Quality Components

The sound of an audio interface relies on much more than the converter chip itself – all of the components in the audio circuit have a direct result on the audio quality. Keeping to our “no compromise” design aesthetic, the VRS8 utilizes high-quality WIMA capacitors for the entire audio path.

Low Latency Native

Part of the goal behind creating the Virtual Recording Studio was to provide a near-realtime experience when using our analog modeled plugins while tracking. In order to achieve that goal, we created a new technology called LLN, which stands for “Low Latency Native”. LLN utilizes a custom hard-wired converter chipset, which reduces managed components in the audio path and allows an incredible 1 millisecond of latency at 96K (with a 32 sample buffer). This latency spec allows you to monitor through mic and preamp emulations while tracking, giving you the ability to hear your audio in context while still allowing you to change your mind later.

XTC Audio Clock

The audio clock is the heart of any recording interface, which is why it was important that the VRS8 had a killer clocking system onboard. We use satellite-grade XTC clocking technology, utilizing four temperature-compensated crystal oscillators for ultra-stable audio performance, keeping your audio jitter and distortion free.

Discrete Headphone Amplifiers

Most engineers listen to music on headphones when working in the studio, but headphone amplifiers are the first place that manufacturers usually look to cut costs when building an interface. Instead of using typical designs that cost mere pennies, we use discrete amplifiers to ensure that your headphones sound robust and clear for all of your monitoring tasks. Not only that, we also added in two separate monitor mixes and the ability to use the VRS8 as a speaker switcher.

Native MIDI IO

Our “no compromise” design goal extended well into areas that other manufacturers simply ignore, which is evidenced by the VRS8’s native MIDI IO. Unlike USB MIDI interfaces (where MIDI information has to fight with your mouse, keyboard, and other USB traffic) MIDI IO on the VRS8 never touches the USB bus. You can count on hyper-accurate MIDI timing, and stuck sustain pedals when tracking keyboards and synths should become a thing of the past.

The Slate Digital ML-1 is at the heart of your VMS system, providing a gateway to a vast array of classic microphones. This ultra-linear, sonically neutral large-diaphragm condenser mic captures even the loudest sounds with clinical precision — the perfect blank canvas to use with Slate Digital's microphone emulations. Beyond that, the ML-1 accurately reproduces the proximity effect of a vintage large-diaphragm condenser in cardioid mode. When combined with a Slate Digital VMS-ONE mic preamp or VRS8 audio interface, and their incredible VMS software, the ML-1 supplies you with unprecedented sonic flexibility.

The “VMS” is a hybrid system that utilizes an extremely transparent condenser microphone, a sonically-neutral preamp, and state-of-the-art digital processing suite that recreates the tone of classic microphones and preamps. The Virtual Microphone System collapses the wall standing between audio engineers and expensive world-class audio tools, allowing them access to the virtual microphone locker of their dreams for under a thousand dollars.

My Apex 210

Generally considered to be the ideal microphone for vocals, solo instruments and any broadcast application, the classic ribbon microphone design boasts the most natural sounding audio capture available. Traditionally the ribbon microphone has remained exclusively in the realm of the large studio, until now.

The Apex210 has been engineered to deliver the unique character and tone of the classic ribbon design at an unbelievable price, making the ribbon microphone available for the first time to the home studio enthusiast and project studio engineer.

The active element of the Apex210 is a very thin corrugated aluminum ribbon mounted under low tension between the poles of a strong magnet. The asymmetrical figure-8 pickup pattern has an extended sweet spot on the rear face of the microphone allowing the recording to accurately reproduce the natural space and ambient reverberation of a good sounding live room with incredibly fast and accurate transient response and stunning realism. The Apex210 ribbon microphone is ideal for today's direct to digital recordings.

Although ribbon microphones are by their nature extremely fragile, the Apex210 can handle high sound pressure levels approaching 165dB range. The low-tension 2-inch long, 2-micron thick aluminum ribbon design offers audio reproduction with smooth, natural extended low and high frequency response. The Apex210 is shipped with a custom designed aluminum carrying case. The integrated yoke mic stand mount and internal shock mount assembly protects the extremely fragile ribbon element during use.

The Pearly Hendrix Stratocaster.

The body came from a Custom Ultra Strat Plus I bought brand new in 1990.

I stripped everything and had Jason’s guitars build me this amazing hybrid. It has a custom Warmoth CBS right hand reverse headstock Maple with soft-vee rear profile, Graph Tech Tusq nut, Set of EB Regular Slinky Coated 10-46, Custom gun stock oil finish, natural. Grover Locking Tuners 12" radius, 6150 frets.

A Bourns 500K pot, push/pull, Custom Pick Guard, vintage pearl, Black Seymore Duncan pick up covers hiding the neck and middle custom-wound Strat Jimi Hendrix pickups based on Seymour Duncan's original design for Jimi.

For the bridge pickup I went with Seymore’s Pearly Gates Humbucker for that classic '59 humbucker sound with slightly hotter output?

Since this photo I have changed out the classic Volume and tone knobs for Chrome barrel knobs.

I don’t understand why some people will only accept a guitar if it has an instantly recognizable guitar sound. Finding ways to use the same guitar people have been using for 50 years to make sounds that no one has heard before is truly what gets me off.

The Whole Lotta Hicks Les Paul

My Black Epiphone Les Paul pawn shop find I bought for $300.

Made at the
Deawon Plant, China
on July, 2004
Production Number: 2715

I stripped it entirely replaced everything. Top wrapped the strings.

Added Seymore Duncan’s Whole lotta Humbuckers with Jimmy Page style setup that provides several new tonal configurations to help you dial in your tone.

The recipe for these pickups starts with a rough cast Alnico 5 magnet, plain enamel wire, and Seymour's unique wind pattern. The bridge is a hotter-than-vintage 8.78k DC resistance and the neck is similarly beefy at 8.20k. Tonally, the rough cast magnets add warmth and balanced note-to-note clarity so everything sounds bigger. What is sonically unique about the Whole Lotta Humbucker pickups is the way that they push your amp and add a very slight natural compression and sustain to your playing.

The Bourns Push/Pull pots allow you to split your humbuckers into single coil pickups, allows both pickups to be put out of phase, and can put both pickups in series as well.

With 21 tonal variations, this wiring gives my Les Paul a library of tones to choose from.

I also replaced the orange drop capacitors with real vintage 1957 Bumble Bee caps that were rated .022 +/-20% 400v.

This guitar now plays and sounds like a $5000 dollar Les Paul

Thanks to Jason’s Guitars for doing all the mods for me.

I love this guitar.

My first Jackson PRO Soloist purchased in the 80’s at Lightning music in Austin.

The guitar features pink finish, 3 single-coil pickups, and a Kahler bridge.

It is also the same guitar Jeff Beck played on ARMS Charity Concerts in 1983, and during the studio sessions of the “Flash” album for solos on “People Get Ready” and “Ambitious”. He also used it in 1984 during the legendary CBS Records convention in Honolulu, when he played on stage with Stevie Ray Vaughan for the first time.

His is actually nicknamed “Tina” because Tina Turner engraved her name on the guitar.
